Crane-Assisted Emergency Tree Surgery in Frodsham Following Storm Darragh

Client: Mr Cook

Location: Frodsham, Cheshire

Date: 9 December 2024

Tree species: Pine, Leylandii, Holly and Laurel

When Storm Darragh swept through Cheshire on the 6th and 7th of December 2024, it caused severe tree failure across Mr Cook’s property in Frodsham.

What followed was not just storm damage, but a complex, high-risk scenario requiring specialist emergency tree surgery and precision planning.

The Situation

In one area of the garden, a mature Leylandii in a neighbouring garden took the full force of the wind and failed. Its collapse triggered a catastrophic chain reaction at Mr Cook’s property, uprooting approximately 9 mature trees, including pine, holly and laurel, and damaging several others in the surrounding area.

In a second, more critical location, a large pine at the end of a row of sixteen trees was blown over and landed directly on Mr Cook’s house.

The tree was left resting on the structure, creating a dangerous load point and causing visible structural damage to the property.

This was a situation where conventional tree removal methods would have been unsafe. Any uncontrolled movement risked further damage to the building and serious danger to anyone working nearby.

The Tree Challenge

The key challenge was managing two active hazard zones at the same time.

The mass uprooting in the first area left multiple trees entangled and under tension, with neighbouring trees compromised by the initial collapse.

The pine resting on the house presented a far greater technical risk. The tree could not be climbed safely due to storm damage, and any attempt to cut it downwards would have transferred weight directly onto the roof and walls below. A controlled lifting solution was the only safe option.

The Solution

Frodsham Tree Solutions attended the site on 9 December 2024 to carry out emergency works.

In the first area, the team removed the uprooted and windblown trees, carefully dismantling the collapsed group and making safe the surrounding trees that had been damaged by the impact.

For the pine resting on the house, Frodsham Tree Solutions deployed a crane-assisted dismantle. Using a crane allowed the tree to be taken down in suspended sections, lifting each piece clear of the building without placing any additional load on the structure.

This method ensured:

The tree was removed without further damage to the house

Each section was controlled and stabilised during removal

The risk to operatives and the property was minimised

The pine was fully dismantled and lifted away piece by piece, leaving the building secure and accessible for repairs.

Once all dangerous trees were removed, stump grinding was carried out across the site, eliminating trip hazards and allowing the garden to be safely restored.

The Result

The property was made safe, all storm-damaged and unstable trees were removed, and the crane-assisted dismantling prevented any further damage to Mr Cook’s home.

What had been a chaotic and hazardous scene following Storm Darragh was transformed into a stable, manageable landscape, allowing building repairs and garden recovery to move forward with confidence.

This project demonstrated the importance of rapid emergency response, disciplined planning and the right equipment when dealing with severe tree storm damage. Through calm decision-making and specialist tree surgery techniques, Frodsham Tree Solutions delivered a safe and controlled outcome in a situation where the margin for error was extremely small.
