The complete removal of a tree is sometimes necessary because of conflicting site use or the death or dangerous condition of a tree. This can sometimes be accomplished, where surroundings permit by directional felling of the tree. Where space or environment will not permit this a dismantling method may have to be used. Once felled the tree will be dismantled on the ground with the timber and brash taken away, this can also be left on site if required. The stump can either be left in place or removed as desired

Crown Lifts

Crown lifting involves pruning of the lower branches of a tree to achieve a desired vertical clearance above ground level or other surface. This clearance should be no more than one third of the height of the tree. Trees are crown lifted to allow more light under the tree, look taller and allow egress under the canopy. If many branches are to be removed from the trunk it is recommended this be done gradually over a period of years.

Crown Thinning

Crown thinning involves the removal of branches within a crown, A tree can look cluttered and many branches fail due to being crowded out. This operation will enhance the balance of mature trees allow more light to pass through the tree and reduce wind resistance ultimately affecting potential storm damage. Weak and dead wood is also removed from within the canopy.

Crown reduction is usually carried out when a tree has outgrown its position and more light is required where it is shading. It is achieved by removing 10 – 30% of each branch to reduce the overall size of the tree.

Stump Grinding

The fastest and most efficient way to remove sizeable stumps is by mechanical means using a stump grinder. This effectively beats the stump using steel teeth until completely removed. Care is taken not to disturb and underground services or infrastructure during this process. The stump will be taken down to at least 6” below ground level then backfilled and flattened ready for progression.

Dead Wooding

Through ageing, infestation, diseases or damage a tree will contain dead wood. This can cause injury to personnel, healthy limbs or property if left unmaintained. Dead wooding a tree is the removal of said dead wood making the tree safer and healthier. It is good practice to remove any crossovers or rubbing branches during dead wooding as this will also produce dead wood in time.

Where directional felling cannot be achieved, a dismantling procedure must be employed. The tree will be dismantled piece by piece sometimes from within the tree or may require the use of cranes or elevated platforms. This latter procedure would generally be more costly due to machine hire. The parts of the tree will be lowered to the ground by use of specialist rigging equipment or crane where it can be dismantled further.

Pruning

Fruit trees require pruning to maintain shape and health, different fruit trees require pruning at different types of year but as a rule of thumb, free standing fruit trees such as orchard trees should be pruned in the winter and trained trees such as plum and cherry garden trees should be pruned in august/September time. During pruning, inward growing, dead and crossover branches should be removed as best practice.

Tree & Hedge Planting

Specified trees and hedges for domestic or commercial purposes can be sourced and/or planted by Frodsham Tree Solutions in accordance with S3998 and BS7370-4.

Storms can have adverse effects on trees endangering, personnel, property, the tree itself and wildlife, in many cases this is unpreventable. Once trees are damaged there is a possibility they can be restored to a certain degree or completely and safely removed. Once restored it is good practice to prune a tree to ensure balance is retained.

As part of our wider diseased tree management service, Frodsham Tree Solutions provides expert assessments, safety-focused interventions and responsible planning for ash dieback.

Pollarding is a traditional and highly specialised form of tree management used to control the size and shape of certain species. Unlike standard pruning or reduction, pollarding involves cutting back the tree’s branches to a defined framework, encouraging fresh, healthy regrowth each season or cycle. When done correctly and on the right tree species, pollarding helps maintain safe clearance, preserves the tree’s life, and keeps it in a manageable form.

The guide outlines why professional tree care is essential for safety, tree health and legal compliance in 2026. It explains key services such as pruning, crown management, tree removal, stump grinding and disease control, including ash dieback. Emphasis is placed on qualified arborists, risk assessments and responsible practices that protect property, people and biodiversity while supporting long-term landscape management.
