Project Overview
Frodsham Tree Solutions Ltd was contacted by Robinson Forestry to assist with the urgent removal of a mature Poplar tree in Knutsford that had been identified as posing a significant risk to the adjacent railway line.
Following an inspection by Network Rail, the tree was declared dangerous and required immediate removal. Positioned immediately alongside the railway boundary and well within falling distance of the live railway, the project required careful planning, specialist arboricultural expertise and close coordination with Network Rail to ensure the works could be completed safely.
Working in these environments demands far more than conventional tree surgery. Every stage of the operation had to be carefully planned to protect the railway infrastructure, maintain public safety and ensure there was no disruption to rail operations.
Understanding the Challenge
Trees growing alongside operational railway infrastructure present one of the most technically demanding environments within arboriculture.
Unlike many tree removals, there is virtually no margin for error. Any uncontrolled movement of timber or branches could damage railway assets, compromise security fencing or create an unacceptable risk to the operational railway.
The Poplar had developed immediately adjacent to the railway corridor, with sections of the canopy extending directly towards the live line. The objective was not simply to remove the tree, but to dismantle it in a controlled manner whilst ensuring no part of the tree entered the railway corridor at any stage.
Alongside the technical aspects of the work, the project also required close collaboration with Robinson Forestry and Network Rail to coordinate safe working practices throughout the operation.
Planning and Coordination
Before any climbing work commenced, detailed planning was undertaken to establish the safest method of dismantling the tree.
Comprehensive Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) were prepared, supported by dynamic on-site risk assessments throughout the project as conditions evolved.
One of the most important aspects of the planning process was coordinating the works around live train movements.
Working alongside Network Rail operatives, all tree dismantling activities affecting the railway corridor were carefully scheduled to take place only during agreed safe working windows. This required continuous communication throughout the project, ensuring work paused whenever necessary before recommencing once the railway had confirmed it was safe to continue.

Precision Rigging Alongside Live Rail Infrastructure
The most technically demanding stage of the project involved dismantling the sections of canopy extending towards the railway.
Conventional dismantling methods were simply not suitable in this environment. Every branch and timber section had to be removed using advanced rigging techniques, allowing each piece to be lowered safely under complete control.
Nothing was permitted to free-fall.
Each section was individually secured before cutting, with carefully selected rigging points, lowering devices and anchor systems ensuring every branch and timber section could be guided safely into a predetermined landing zone.
This level of precision prevented any contact with the railway security fencing while eliminating the risk of timber or debris entering the rail corridor.
Throughout the dismantling process, our climbing arborists and experienced ground crew maintained constant communication. Every rigging operation was planned before work progressed, with the climber and ground team working together to control every movement of the tree from the canopy to the ground.
This coordinated approach allowed the tree dismantling process to progress safely while maintaining complete control throughout the operation.
Controlled Directional Felling Using the Eder Portable Winch
Once the canopy had been safely dismantled, the remaining stem was reduced to a manageable height, ready for the final stage of removal.
During our inspection, signs of partial decay were identified at the base of the Poplar. Although the remaining stem could be safely felled, its condition meant that maintaining accurate directional control was essential.
To provide complete confidence throughout the operation, we deployed our portable Eder winch system.
Rather than relying solely on conventional tree felling techniques, the Eder winch enabled us to apply controlled mechanical force throughout the fell, accurately guiding the remaining stem into its intended landing zone.
The use of the winch significantly reduced uncertainty during the operation and provided an additional level of control when working with partially compromised timber in such a restricted environment.
For technically challenging tree removals adjacent to critical infrastructure, specialist equipment such as the Eder winch forms an essential part of our approach, enabling our arborists to work with greater precision whilst reducing risk to surrounding assets.
The final fell was completed exactly as planned, without damage to the railway security fencing, surrounding infrastructure or the operational railway.
