Case Study – Hazardous Tree Removal at a Local Primary School

Keeping School Grounds Safe

Trees provide enormous benefits within school grounds. They create shade, provide valuable wildlife habitat and help make outdoor spaces more attractive and enjoyable for children.

But schools also present a very particular tree-management responsibility.

Playgrounds, pathways, entrances and outdoor learning areas can be occupied by hundreds of children, parents and staff throughout the school day. When a dead or structurally compromised tree sits above one of these areas, you must take the potential consequences of failure seriously.

Our team recently attended a local primary school where dead and potentially hazardous trees had been identified directly above a children’s play area.

With dead timber presenting an unacceptable risk of falling branches, the priority was clear: safely remove the hazardous trees while protecting the playground equipment and surrounding school grounds.

Why Tree Safety Is Particularly Important in Schools

Professional tree management always involves considering both the tree’s condition and what could be affected if part of it failed.

On school grounds, that relationship becomes even more important.

Trees may be positioned alongside playgrounds, footpaths, sports areas, car parks, entrances, classrooms and areas where children gather throughout the day.

Unlike a tree in a remote part of an estate or woodland, these trees are often surrounded by people.

This doesn’t mean mature trees within schools should automatically be viewed as dangerous, far from it. Established trees can be some of the most valuable natural assets within a school environment.

It does mean their condition should be understood and foreseeable risks appropriately managed.

The Danger of Dead Trees and Falling Branches Above Play Areas

Dead timber requires particular consideration when positioned above frequently occupied areas.

Once a tree or branch dies, the wood gradually deteriorates. Its structural characteristics change over time, and branches can eventually fail.

In this case, the location of the affected trees was especially important because they were situated directly above an area designed for children to play.

Leaving potentially hazardous dead timber above the playground wasn’t considered an acceptable risk.

After assessing the situation, we identified tree removal as the appropriate course of action.

Planning Tree Work Around a Children’s Playground

Removing a tree is only one part of an operation like this.

We also needed to consider everything beneath and surrounding it.

The play equipment and associated infrastructure had to remain protected throughout the work, while the site itself needed to be carefully controlled.

Before work commenced, the team planned how to access, dismantle, and remove the trees without causing unnecessary damage to the playground or surrounding grounds.

This type of planning is fundamental to professional arboriculture.

The question isn’t simply, “How do we remove this tree?”

It’s also, “How do we remove it while protecting everything and everyone around it?”

Using Our MEWP for Safe and Controlled Tree Removal

Our specialist Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) provided the team with controlled access to the trees.

Rather than allowing material to fall unpredictably from height, our professional arborists accessed the required sections of the trees and removed them progressively.

Using the appropriate equipment was particularly important given the playground infrastructure immediately below.

The MEWP provided a stable working platform for our arborists and allowed us to complete the operation with greater precision while maintaining control over the work area.

Every site is different, and the safest access method depends on the tree, its condition, and its surroundings. Where appropriate, having our own specialist MEWP capability gives us another option when planning complex or restricted-access tree work.

Protecting Play Equipment and School Infrastructure

Schools contain considerably more infrastructure than may initially appear.

Alongside play equipment, tree work may need to account for fencing, pathways, lighting, buildings, sports surfaces, outdoor classrooms and other facilities.

Damage to any of these could disrupt the school and add costs.

Throughout this project, protecting the existing playground and surrounding grounds remained an important part of the operation.

We removed the trees in a controlled manner, allowing the required safety work to be completed while protecting the surrounding infrastructure.

Leaving the School Clean, Tidy and Ready for Use

Our responsibility didn’t end when the trees were safely on the ground.

As requested by the school, we removed all resulting arisings and waste material from site.

We then left the working area clean and tidy, allowing the school to return the space to normal use without timber, brash, or other material to manage.

For us, that’s an important part of completing work within schools and other public-facing environments.

The finished site matters just as much as the tree work itself.

Why Regular Tree Surveys for Schools Matter

Hazardous tree management for schools shouldn’t rely solely on reacting when a branch falls or a tree visibly deteriorates.

Regular professional tree inspections can help schools understand the condition of the trees across their grounds and identify potential concerns before they develop into more significant problems.

A school tree survey may consider factors such as deadwood, structural defects, decay, fungal activity, declining tree health and the relationship between individual trees and frequently occupied areas.

The level and frequency of future inspection should then be determined by the trees, their condition, the site, and the inspecting arboricultural professional’s recommendations.

Trees around playgrounds, entrances, footpaths and other high-use areas may warrant particular attention because of the number of people regularly moving beneath them.

Importantly, a professional tree survey isn’t about identifying trees to remove.

It should support informed decision-making, helping schools understand which trees can be safely retained, where maintenance may be appropriate and where intervention is genuinely required.

Retaining Trees Wherever It Is Appropriate to Do So

Good arboriculture isn’t measured by how many trees we remove.

Where mature and established trees can be safely retained, they provide considerable environmental, educational and landscape benefits for schools.

They offer shade during warmer weather, support biodiversity, give children opportunities to experience nature, and contribute to greener, more attractive school grounds.

Sometimes, however, a tree’s condition and location mean intervention is necessary.

The important thing is that these decisions are based on professional assessment, the level of risk and the individual circumstances of the site rather than unnecessary or indiscriminate tree removal.

This project had a straightforward outcome but an important purpose: making a children’s play area safe again.

The team removed the hazardous trees in a controlled manner, protected the playground infrastructure, and cleared all resulting material from the site.
